My beautiful babies. My beautiful mixed-race babies. Half white, half Chinese.
We talk a lot about what it means to be mixed race/ethnicity. Mom and dad's different skin colors, how grandma and grandpa and Ah-mah speak differently, why we want the kids to learn two languages, and understand two cultures. We have books with Chinese children. A LOT of books with white children. We've tried to show our kids that there are many people in the world who are like them.
This past week I've realized that I'm not doing enough. I've always been proud of how we incorporate diversity into our every day. But that diversity has been primarily focused on our immediate family. That's not enough. My kids need to see more black faces. More brown faces. They need to start to understand racism and privilege, at their age-appropriate levels.
My kids look mostly like white kids. They'll likely never face racism or discrimination. They'll be in the same position as me - they'll need to learn about racism, oppression, implicit bias.
The town we live in is not extremely diverse. It's up to me and Aron to find the books and shows that will show them the diverse world we live in. I'm so grateful to the many people sharing adult and childrens books by black authors, about black children. I want our kids to understand their own mixed-race bodies, and I need them to see, understand, and honor POC.
I was naive to the challenges of POC growing up, but my kids will be different. I'll do more so they'll be better. They'll help change the system. They'll be part of the generation that ends the hate.
