Have you ever heard that your skin is your body’s first line of defense🛡? Well, it’s true. And it applies for the COVID-19 #virus , too.
This pathogen🦠 cannot penetrate your skin. Your #skin , apart from being a physical barrier, also contains an innate immune system that protects⚔️ you from any microscopic intruders that may get through. Once this system recognizes an invader, it sends out signals to initiate a cascade of inflammatory #cytokines and calls for #immunecells to come fight🥊.
Your #respiratorytract , however, has a thin layer of cells in order to allow gas exchange. This makes it quite vulnerable to COVID-19 and other #pathogens. You can contract the disease from breathing in ‘viral droplets’. Viral droplets💧are virus particles encapsulated in a #microscopic amount of #saliva or #mucus. These droplets can travel up to 6 ft (1.8m) in the air after someone coughs, sneezes, laughs, talks or simply breathes.
For this reason, the best way to combat the virus is #socialdistancing. Staying home🏠 is the ideal way to avoid COVID-19. If you do go outside🏙, try not to touch many surfaces; if you do, avoid touching your face as your nose👃🏽, mouth👄 and eyes👁 are the entry points of the virus. Studies have shown that the virus can linger in the air for up to 3️⃣ hours, and survive on hard surfaces for around 3️⃣days. So when you get home, make sure you wash your hands thoroughly.
Regular soap🧼 works very well to kill the virus; it destroys its #lipid outer layer. Hand sanitizers also work against it as long as they have a 60% or higher of #alcohol concentration. Some have resorted to using #disinfectants like bleach and hydrogen peroxide, but these only work on hard surfaces, not on skin. Moreover, they are very damaging to your skin and it could lead to #handdermatitis (more information on that🔜).
