"You must come with an open mind. Come prepared. Come with a goal.”
Aisha Hermitt, originally from Jamaica, shares the life-changing decision she made 3 years ago to pursue her nursing career in the U.S.
When Aisha visited hospitals as a young girl, she remembers observing the nurses, admiring them, and thinking, "I want to be that one day." After she graduated, she began her nursing career at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Jamaica, where she worked on the Med-Surg Unit.
As she continued her nursing career, Aisha considered moving to the U.S. to advance in her profession. She believed there would be more opportunities for her, and she wanted a better life for both her and her family. That's when her journey with Shearwater Health began.
Fast forward to December of 2017, when Aisha arrived in Illinois. When she finally met the members of the Shearwater team with whom she'd been speaking with for over two years, she thought, "This is it-- it's finally happening!"
And thus began Aisha's journey at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center. During her arrival week, she thoroughly enjoyed seeing her new apartment, spending time with her Shearwater arrival coordinators, and meeting the other nurses - -whom she described as "lovely." She remembers asking her preceptor a ton of questions when she first began, because "it's better to do the right thing than what you think is right."
Aisha has grown exponentially since moving to the U.S. -- both as a nurse and as a person. "This job really pushed me out of my comfort zone. I interact with more people -- I think I smile more. I'm a bit more outspoken because of it."
She offers one piece of advice to anyone thinking about taking their nursing career to the U.S.: "You must come with an open mind, come prepared, come with a goal. Everything is new, you just have to be brave and focus."
In June of 2020, Aisha completed her assignment with Shearwater Health and has continued her nursing career at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center. We are thrilled that she’ll be offering her incredible nursing skills in the U.S. for years to come. We are so proud of Aisha and her amazing work as a Shearwater Nurse!
