This may look like just an ordinary box but to me, it represents SO much more. It represents creation, sustainability, and innovation.
This is an old repurposed amazon box that I glued with natural fiber rope.
My roomies and I are redecorating our place and I wanted a cute hipster twine basket to put my books in. As I was scrolling through Pinterest, pinning my dream decor I stumbled upon UPCYCLING boxes. And if y’all know me, I’m OBSESSED with upcycling.
The idea behind upcycling is to give something a greater value than it originally had. The difference between recycling and upcycling is that in recycling a material such as glass, you might melt down the glass to make new glass objects. New bottles and jars from old ones.
In upcycling, the point is to take something old and no longer wanted, and repurpose it into something new, more valuable, or something that serves some more worthwhile function. So rather than turning glass bottles into more glass bottles for single use, upcycling would repurpose the glass into lanterns or vases, that serve multiple functions and have a longer life.
This amazon box would’ve been doomed for “the recycling bin” or landfill. Instead it is now something that brings me so much joy AND prevented waste!
So, what will you rescue next? The next time you’re throwing away an almond milk carton, browning bananas, old clothes, or even a wine bottle, I challenge you to take a moment to think of the second life that item could have.
Think of what you can do to become an upcycler yourself?
How can would you make changes around your house?
How would you influence your friends and family?
How could you take this to work?
Who can you inspire along the way?
The possibilities go one and on.
This is the movement you get to be a part of.
