Rose—a year ago today my aunt lost her battle to cancer. She was the definition of an angel. .
The eulogy by my cousin and I:
It is impossible to describe my mom in a short 3 minute speech. She was far too great, far too inspirational, and far too courageous. We could easily be here all day if we talked about all of her accomplishments, attributes and achievements.
She was the kindest person I know, always there to lend a helping hand and dropping anything and everything to help someone in need. I have always said that she was the glue that held St. Bonaventure together. But her forever humble demeanor would never admit this. She is and still continues to be an angel that guides us through this journey we call life.
Others may know her as a fierce business woman, traveling the world and serving 28 years at IBM, a fashionista who always dressed to a T and knew all the latest and greatest beauty products and fashion trends, or a charitable volunteer that selflessly gave her all to others. But to me, she was always just Mom. A mom who could do anything, and one that I will always look up to.
We met in Vietnam and in her words, “We chose each other.” Running on the tarmac to catch our flight, our life together has never been any less adventurous from that point forward. She told me how “being my mother was her absolute joy and best thing that has happened to her,” even though she has been on so many wondrous ventures only she could have the bravery to do.
Although our time was cut far too short, she taught me so many things in the time that we did have together. She taught me the true values in life and how to act, to always put my best foot forward and to not ever settle for something that was below par. She also taught me never to do the bare minimum, but to always go above and beyond.
I know I could never accomplish all that she did, but if I could be even just half the person that she was, I hope that I will make her proud as she’s smiling down from heaven. She always told me to surround myself with good people. They say that you are a mix of the 5 people you hang around most. So make sure you always have a Rose in your group because she was my Rose.
