Yeah, The Irishman is fantastic, but you already knew that. I can’t vouch for the people saying it’s one of Scorsese’s best since I’ve yet to see Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, The Departed, and everything else that isn’t Goodfellas (review in three days by the way), Hugo, and After Hours. But I can say this is a freaking masterpiece and the best movie of the year so far excluding Parasite. The entire cast is phenomenal in every way. De Niro is a top pick for best actor without question and Pacino and Pesci are both strong contenders for supporting. The cinematography is very well done and production design is virtually flawless. The de-aging effects are barely noticeable, which is personally the best way effects can be used. This film nails tone and spiritual aesthetic without missing a beat and plays directly to what it knows it is. And of course, you have the three and a half hour runtime. This is the longest film I’ve ever seen, but it doesn’t feel it. At the absolute most, it’s a few minutes over three hours. Sure, scenes could’ve been cut, but it’s effortlessly entertaining and you don’t mind at all. Also, why the hell is this a Netflix movie? By definition of a Netflix movie, it’s too good to be a Netflix movie. I’m sure I’ll say the same about Marriage Story next week, but Netflix is on fire putting out best picture nominee after best picture nominee. And whatever your stance is on the whole Scorsese/Marvel thing, this is epically cinematic. The man has rights! The Irishman is an expertly crafted narrative with skill and talent that outshine practically all else.
