You would never tell your best friend that they are a failure. So why do you talk to yourself like this?
We are all our own biggest critics. It's okay to push yourself, but we need to find a healthy balance between self-criticism and self-efficacy.
This loud, dominating voice in our head tells us that we shoulda, coulda, woulda. It may cause us to step away from trying new things because of the risk of failure.
When we think of that “ridiculous” goal we have, that voice can get in the way of believing you can do it. It reminds you that it will take long days, low energy days, days where things didn't go your way. But what it doesn't tell you is that there will also be days where you see improvement, have high motivation, and days where everything went your way. No matter what, in the end, you will feel beyond satisfied for working hard and giving it your all. Even, if end result wasn’t what you were expecting.
Continue to strive to be your best, but don't get down when things get tough. You're human. Set small little goals every day, week, and even month so that you can stay on track as best as possible.
Let's say your goal is weight loss. Think of what you can do today and this week to help you in that direction. Maybe it's plan your workout (time, location, program). Maybe its adding in some 5-10 minutes of extra walking. Maybe it's planning out your meals, or making sure to have protein or vegetables each meal.
These small little victories will give you a sense of accomplishment and success. These are tools that keep you motivated, even on the days you don't feel up to it.
Be kinder to yourself. But don't get down on yourself if things don't go 100% your way. If this current situation has taught us anything, it's that as much as we plan ahead, some things are out of our hands. Adjust, readapt, and before you know it, the voice in your head will be your best friend :-) Plan ahead, set goals, and get after it! You Got This!
