While staying home due to #covid19 , I was curious to see how professional sports leagues, including #mlb , would be affected and if there could be a correlation effect to my local baseball beat, #coconino High School. With all spring #sports in #az canceled for the rest of the academic year, how could local #sports and #athletes be affected?
The #baseballtonight podcast, titled “New Changes to the MLB Draft,” premiered today on #playerfm and was very intriguing and insightful on my quest. In particular, the topic revolved around how #mlbdraft rounds and bonuses given would both decrease this year and possibly the next. As a result, many late-round players would not be drafted and potentially not see a baseball field again. On a college level, eligibility would be potentially be out the window. For high schoolers, Kyle Peterson on the podcast said, you “might lose 10 high schoolers...two or three of them may sign. If you limit the draft, only one of them might sign.” Overall, I really liked the podcast episode. The content flowed well from topic to topic and the sources had great information that coincided with what was being reported nationally. In particular, the information added up to what @jeffpassan has reported, which includes the notion that “MLB has a right to shorten the 2020 draft to five rounds.” Compared to previous podcasts, the material in this specific one links up and branches off previous podcasts while also standing alone, which is nice for individuals who have not watched the other ones.
With the photos of #coconino High School’s baseball field empty now and for the future, how high schoolers and college players alike have been affected by these changes is exponential. The podcast was able to help me realize the severity of the virus down to local sporting levels.
Overall, I rate this podcast a 8/10. It was very insightful but I feel as if they could have talked more about high schoolers as opposed to mostly college players. All in all, though, #baseballtonight put together a great podcast that put a lot of information and scenarios out there for how the #mlbdraft and #mlb as a whole will be affected by #covid19. #instareporting20
