If you’re anything like the rest of the human race, you’ve probably experienced cravings for certain types of food at one point or another.
There are different reasons why you may crave a certain food.
One of the big reasons is emotion. Sorry, comfort eaters, but you probably get these cravings far more often than the rest. This is because cravings are caused by the region of the brain responsible for pleasure and reward.
Another reason for cravings is for certain nutrients. Oftentimes the body craves certain foods because it is lacking is specific nutrients. This is especially true if you are someone who doesn’t eat in a particularly healthy way, or if you’ve just had a weekend bender with Bud Lights and pizza as your primary energy sources.
In addition to cravings for specific foods, it’s possible to just crave anything and everything, regardless of what it is. This can be a sign of real hunger, but it can also be a sign of thirst. So if you’ve been on the beach in the sun all day snacking, you may just need some water.
You can reduce food cravings by getting enough sleep (7-9 hours), eating enough lean protein, avoiding intense hunger by eating regularly, and reducing stress levels.
