Better go outside before it's illegal! .
It seems like social distancing has mostly worked, though many people seem to be ignoring the idea at times. In response, BC Parks has blanket closed all park/rec areas. While some should absolutely be closed because of population density and recreation type, many should be left open for public use to help with sanity during this interesting time. The government is reporting an estimated 1,000,000 cases before this is all over and of those, a prediction of 11,000 deaths. That is not an insignificant number, however that works out to 1.1% of cases. .
With this in mind, if we can prove we're smart enough not to repeatedly tailgate in parking lots, maybe we can get Parks to reopen some of the multi-use rec areas. It is remarkably easy to maintain recommended physical distances between trail users. The idea of a quarantine is to keep sick, or at-risk people at home, not everyone! Especially now that we have an idea of mortality rates, virus gestation, and symptom expressions we should be able to effectively stop transmission with good hygiene, social distancing, and limiting exposure to populus areas. .
It's also important that people don't turn on each other. You may not know the context behind people gathering, or not maintaining social distancing as you see fit. Maybe they live together, or work in close proximity, or are frontline workers who's job is more hazardous than sitting having coffee together. .
Furthermore, it's important to be in contact with your local government officials if you feel the need to express to them issues with lack of policy or too much. We employ them, not the other way around. .
Hopefully we can get closer to normal over the next few weeks. I am nervous to see what Canada looks like in 8 months if we continue this way until we get a vaccine, which is not guaranteed to arrive. .
