Well... today (nope, now yesterday since it’s nearly 3am on Saturday) did NOT go as planned. Although not as ideal as rehearsals, I was successful in getting all but the baby moos into the pen for vaccinations.
Our wonderfully patient and kind vet team came, got setup, and we began to create a lineup within the corral. Everyone was calm and orderly until Julie the Giant decided she had enough and leapt over our fence like an Olympic hurdle-jumper, busting it in the process. And not just Julie jumped - Leia and then Megan followed.
They saw greener pastures nextdoor at the 200 acre ranching property that they originally came from and skipped over there. We - The Mr., our two vets and I attempted to coax them back on foot but they weren’t having it. They’ve seen those needles before! They ran deep into the forest of trees.
I felt that if they were not being pursued, they would come back to our gate on their own. After all, this is where they are fed, loved and where their baby’s are! So, we called off the chase.
A couple hours later, while I went out to check the pig’s water, the three amigas were slowly strolling down the road separating our property and, what used to be the rancher’s property.
Megan is one of my buddies. I was surprised to see her jump; she was leading the other two down the road, so I grabbed a handful of hay and met them at the fence. I asked them if they were ready to come home and told them their babies were looking for them. Talking to them the entire way, leading them to the gate, Megan and Julie strolled right in and immediately reunited with the herd and more importantly Hennessie and Jacen.
Leia, on the other hand, decided to forego entering the gate and ran off on her own. However, this time she was inside our main property, but not within the fenced area. It took a bit of time and patience and a few failed attempts, but finally after a total of 4.5 hours, Leia returned to the herd and met up with Ben.
So, the day was stressful, exciting, anxiety-ridden, but happy in the end - EXCEPT, not a single moo received their vaccinations 🤦🏻♀️ So we’ll get to do it all again soon; but with some alterations made.
