  • Photo by @bertiegregory | A polar bear heads out onto the sea ice to hunt at sunrise. Like many polar bears, this male had spent the summer on land, waiting for the sea to refreeze. We met him in late autumn on the west coast of the Hudson Bay. Over a period of just a few days, the sea went from a wavy liquid to a rock-solid ice pathway. We witnessed this bear searching for his first good meal in four months. Follow @bertiegregory for more wildlife adventures. #animals #bear #polar #ice #arctic

  • Photo by @babaktafreshi | Viewing the night sky with nothing but unaided eyes can be a sublime experience. On this vivid dusk in November I was in the Azores, a group of Portuguese islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. #twanight #arttherapy #newmoon #azores

  • Photo by @PaulNicklen | In 2004 I accompanied some of the world’s foremost coral and fish scientists, led by Dr. Greg Stone, to a tiny group of atolls in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. This was my third @NatGeo assignment. We were there to document an example of marine habitats where sharks and corals flourished. What we discovered when we got there was a different story. A commercial long-liner had stripped one of the atolls of approximately 6,000 sharks in only two months, fueled by the increasing demand of the global shark fin trade. Due to our discovery, Dr. Stone and his team worked tirelessly with the Kiribati government to implement some kind of protection for these atolls. Four years later, the Phoenix Islands Protected Area was established, becoming one of the largest marine protected areas on Earth—equivalent in size to California. Follow me @PaulNicklen for more stories about conservation wins and to learn how you can join @SeaLegacy and me as we work toward a future for a healthy and abundant ocean. #Conservation #MPA #Throwback #Ocean

  • Photo by @DaisyGilardini | A newborn harp seal inspects the camera in Magdalen Islands, Gulf of St. Lawrence. Harp seals are widespread in the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. The population has mostly recovered from the early 1970s, when overharvesting reduced their numbers drastically. Despite high pup mortality, the trend has been positive in recent years. The IUCN Red List defines the species as being of "least concern." Even though many people believe Canadas harvest quota is unsustainable, the hunt is declining and not even half the quota is actually harvested in any given year. The biggest threat facing the species today is habitat loss due to climate change. Harp seals depend on good sea ice for molting, resting, and having pups. On the southeastern coast of Iceland, Stokksnes is one of those magical places that you have to see with your own eyes. I remember thinking that this resembled something from Jurassic Park. If you want to see this golden hour light, make sure to visit Iceland during the winter months. Though the days are much shorter, the light is incredibly beautiful.
